Prayer: Five police officers were suspended Wednesday for negligence in connection with the killing of gangster politician Atiq Ahmad and his brother Ashraf, a senior official here said Wednesday.
Shahganj police station manager Ashwani Kumar Singh was among those suspended. The rest are a sub-inspector and three agents.
Ahmad and Ashraf were killed at point blank range by three men posing as journalists in the middle of an interaction with the media on Saturday night as police personnel were escorting them to a hospital in the Shahganj police station area of Prayagraj. for a check up.
The brothers were handcuffed when they were killed in full view of cameramen.
The senior police officer said the five staff members were suspended after a special investigation team (SIT) accused them of negligence in the performance of their duties.
Police Commissioner Ramit Sharma had formed the three-member SIT headed by Police Additional Commissioner (Crime) Satish Chandra to investigate the killings.
