Florida assisted living workers charged with caning residents

Two Florida assisted living facility workers have been arrested after they allegedly caned and knocked down an elderly man over the weekend, according to authorities.

The gruesome attack was carried out on Sunday by staff members Rosa Edwards, 23, and Aneisha Hall, 19, after they saw the man, who is a resident of the facility, push an elderly female resident down the hallway in Inspired Living at Ivy Ridge Assisted Living Facility. , he alleged the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office.

Edwards began whipping the man with a lanyard while she laughed before a physical confrontation ensued, authorities said.

Edwards and Hall grabbed the man and pulled him to the ground, the sheriff’s office said.

Because the man was still holding the wheelchair with the woman aboard, she too fell when the wheelchair fell on its side.

After the fight, the two workers fled while the elderly residents lay on the ground.

The suspects later told a co-worker that the male resident hit the female resident, according to authorities.

But the facility’s CEO didn’t buy his story and reviewed surveillance video before contacting police Monday.

Edwards allegedly admitted to investigators that she used excessive force during the incident and that both women should have handled it differently, the sheriff’s office said.

Edwards and Hall were each charged with two counts of assault on a person 65 or older. They were suspended from their jobs pending dismissal, the sheriff’s office said.

None of the residents were injured, the sheriff’s office said.
