Cute DIY Cricut Surprise Gift Box for Your Loved One (+ SVG)

Do you ever get tired of buying bags that are too big for small simple gifts like gift cards? Or maybe you really want to give something to your loved ones that you made and have your whole heart invested in it. <3 Trust me, I get it. I was also! These boxes are not only really cute but practical, And it can be used year-round for special occasion gifts or even “just because” gifts.

This DIY gift box is so easy to make and the design means it has a built in lid! I have a list of step-by-step instructions for you to follow, and once you get the hang of it, you’ll be making and using these boxes as gift ideas all the time!

These gift boxes are perfect for small gifts like gift cards, candy, love notes, and much more! And these are not just for someone special (husband, boyfriend, wife, girlfriend, etc.), but also for Your children. You can fill them with little jewels/treasures, stickers, kid-friendly candy, and other little gifts they’ll love.

These boxes are a great way to remind someone how much you love them and are thinking of them. 🙂 Alright, let’s get straight to the point!

What you will need for this tutorial:

Any cutting machine (Cricut, Silhouette, etc.)
At least 2 sheets of cardstock (12×12 works best, one box per sheet)
Blue Light Grip Mat
Scotch Quick Dry Tacky Glue (this works best for paper crafts since it has a precision tip)
Cricut Scoring Stylus or scoring wheel
tape or string
Cricut glitter gel pens (I’m using the basic pack with gold and silver)
Access to the design space or design program.

Precut – design space:

In design space, upload the SVG (here’s the template).
Set your file size to a width of 11.406″ and the height will auto-populate to approximately 7.198″.

For the next part, be sure to check out the screenshot of the layout space, as well as the how-to guide (below) to make sure you change all the lines needed for scoring. These will eventually serve as your fold lines.

In design space, make sure to highlight all the fold lines. On the toolbar, click the dropdown titled “linetype” and change the fold lines to “punctuation.”
MAKE SURE TO HIGHLIGHT ALL THE LAYERS ONCE YOU MARKED THEM AND PRESS “ATTACH TO” BEFORE CUTTING. THIS IS IMPORTANT (otherwise layout space will want to cut all the lines separately instead of all together).
Load your paper onto the light blue grip mat and your scoring pencil onto the A-clamp on the machine.

Set your material dial to cardstock. If you are using a heavier cardstock, be sure to adjust the pressure.

Label – Cut and draw (optional)

If you add a tag (here’s the template), repeat the same steps above. Once you upload your blank SVG tag, you’ll adjust the size of the tag to approximately 1.9″ wide and 1.203″ tall.

Add any script font you like for your label and move to the middle. Make sure it’s a thin script font (if you want to know what fonts I’m using, they are Mr. Sheffield for the word “midnight” and regular Helvetica for the word “KISSES”). You can get Mr. Sheffield (for commercial use here and free for personal use here)
Highlight the font layer and in the top toolbar change the dropdown titled “linetype” from cut to “draw”.
MAKE SURE TO HIGHLIGHT ALL LAYERS ONCE MARKED AND PRESS ATTACH TO BEFORE CUTTING. THIS IS IMPORTANT (otherwise layout space will want to cut all the lines separately instead of all together).
Double this for as many tags as needed.
Load your paper on the light blue grip mat and load your pen on the A clamp on the machine.

Set your material dial to cardstock. If you are using a heavier cardstock, be sure to adjust the pressure.

Assembly

Follow the instruction guide on how to fold the lines. It is very important to follow each number as it is labeled first.

• Once you have cut out your project, start folding all of your lines (see guide). The sides of the box (guide step #8) when folded will have 2 mountain folds and 1 valley fold down the center creating a fortune cookie effect.

• Once folded, start by gluing step #1 to the opposite side to form a box. Make sure the punctuation marks are aligned to prevent the box from becoming crooked.

• Next, fold bottom flap #2 in and add glue to the top. Fold bottom flap #3 up. This will begin to create the bottom of the box.

• Next, add glue to the top of bottom flap #3 and fold bottom flap #4. Add more glue to the top of bottom flap #4 and #3 while folding bottom flap #5 down. At this point, the bottom of the box should be created and capable of containing objects.

• Let the glue dry and fill your box with some candy or gifts.

• To close, place both thumb and index finger on all #8 flaps and help the box collapse inward.

• Grasp both #6 flaps and hold them together with one hand as you grasp one of the #7 flaps and bring the slit down and over the top of both #6 flaps. This will keep them attached in place.

• Before completely closing your box, add a ribbon to your label and hang it from the last flap #7 (OPTIONAL). Repeat and bring the last #7 flap down and over the previous #7 flap and both #6 flaps. This closes your box and keeps all the contents inside like a lid.
